Server Room Emergency Procedures
Step 1: Ensure that at least two full backups of all your servers are performed. You must store at least one tape off-site at a location where it will not be damaged by flood waters or fire (e.g. a fire proof safe or safe deposit box).
Step 2: Down your server(s) and power off then disconnect from power source. If you have other equipment in your server room such as UPS, hubs, routers, etc. please disconnect them also.
Step 3: Use an industrial grade plastic sheeting and cover all electrical equipment (including workstations) which are powered off (Do not cover any equipment which is still powered up), if possible use duct tape to cover opening in plastic. Your goal here is to prevent any possible water leaks from affecting your equipment. You should probably have most equipment (including servers) mounted above floor level previously.
Step 4: After passage of storm, check all equipment for any signs of water contamination. If this is observed, DO NOT POWER UP EQUIPMENT. Most water soaked equipment will take about 2 - 4 days in an air-conditioned environment to dry out. You can also use a blow dryer (use low heat setting) to dry out some equipment if you have the expertise to remove the covers. In any case you may want to call in the dealer to inspect any equipment that was wet.
Step 5: Power up your peripheral equipment and server, and check for normal boot up and initialisations. If all your data seems intact then you have weathered the storm. If not then replace what needs to be replaced (eg server hard drives, tape drives), and in the case of your server(s), you will have to restore your data from one of your hopefully 'well-protected' backup tapes
